Announcements July 29, 2018

From our Lesson -
President and Sister Steve Miller spoke today at a combined Relief Society / Priesthood meeting.

They shared a message about the enabling power of the Atonement of Jesus Christ.  He taught that we need to better understand about the Atonement and he also emphasized the importance of teaching our children about it.  He shared a scripture found in Doctrine and Covenants 88:33 that reads --

For what doth it profit a man if a gift is bestowed upon him, and he receive not the gift? Behold, he rejoices not in that which is given unto him, neither rejoices in him who is the giver of the gift.

President Miller had us insert the word “forgiveness” into this scripture -- For what doth it profit a man if forgiveness is bestowed upon him, and he receive it not?  Behold he rejoices not in that forgiveness which is given unto him, neither rejoices in him who is the giver of the forgiveness.

The Atonement of Jesus Christ is a gift given to each one of us.  As we accept this gift, and seek to better understand the miracle and power of the Atonement of Jesus Christ, we will find greater hope in our lives.

Announcements for July 22, 2018

From our Lesson - The worth of souls is great in the sight of God / God wants all of His children to be watched over and cared for.  (4th Sunday topics)

Our lesson was taught by Angie Farr today.

President Russell M. Nelson said “A hallmark of the Lord’s true and living Church will always be an organized, directed effort to minister to the individual children of God and their families.”

The experiences of the sons of Mosiah illustrate that the way we see people affects how we minister to them. Compare the feelings and attitudes between the Sons of Mosiah (Mosiah 28:1-3), and the Nephites (Alma 26:23-26), toward the Lamanites. –Ponder the question – How can I learn to see people more as God sees them?

Doctrine and Covenants 18:10-16

10 Remember the worth of souls is great in the sight of God;

11 For, behold, the Lord your Redeemer suffered death in the flesh; wherefore he suffered the pain of all men, that all men might repent and come unto him.

12 And he hath risen again from the dead, that he might bring all men unto him, on conditions of repentance.

13 And how great is his joy in the soul that repenteth!

14 Wherefore, you are called to cry repentance unto this people.

15 And if it so be that you should labor all your days in crying repentance unto this people, and bring, save it be one soul unto me, how great shall be your joy with him in the kingdom of my Father!

16 And now, if your joy will be great with one soul that you have brought unto me into the kingdom of my Father, how great will be your joy if you should bring many souls unto me!

***Remember our July goal from our Council discussion is to verbally express love and gratitude for someone who has blessed your life.  –Pass a “heart” felt compliment, hug or word of kindness to someone you are prompted to reach out to.  (We will ask for a few sisters to briefly report on their experiences at our next council discussion.)

From our Lesson - Precious Gifts from God - President M. Russell Ballard

...individuals called to do the Lord’s work are not humanly perfect. Stories in the scriptures detail incidents about men and women who were called of God to accomplish a great work—good sons and daughters of our Heavenly Father called to serve in their assignments in the Church, striving to do their best, but none of them yet perfect. The same is true of us today.

Given the reality of our human weaknesses and shortcomings, how do we move forward in supporting and sustaining each other? It begins with faith—real, sincere faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Faith in the Savior is the first principle of the doctrine and gospel of Christ.  ...life can be filled with faith, joy, happiness, hope, and love when we exercise the smallest amount of real faith in Christ—even a mustard seed of faith.

The power of the Sabbath day is to experience in church and at home the delight, the joy, and the warmth of feeling the Spirit of the Lord without any kind of distraction. Too many allow themselves to almost live online with their smart devices—screens illuminating their faces day and night and earbuds in their ears blocking out the still, small voice of the Spirit. If we do not find time to unplug, we may miss opportunities to hear the voice of Him who said, “Be still, and know that I am God.”

The blessing of receiving the sacrament in sacrament meeting must never become routine or just something we do. It is only 70 minutes in a whole week when we can pause and find more peace, joy, and happiness in our lives.

The privilege of service to Heavenly Father’s children is another opportunity to follow the example of His Beloved Son by serving one another. Service opens a window by which we understand the life and ministry of Christ. He came to serve, as the scriptures teach, “even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.”

Nephi captured the importance of our Savior when he declared, “We talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins.” We must keep Christ as the center of our lives at all times and in all places.

Ministering -
Thank you to all sisters who attended the Ministering Interviews this past Sunday. The interviews went well and we are so thankful for the feedback that was given to help us better care for the sisters in our ward.  We appreciate all you do to watch out for each other.

From our Lesson - Take The Holy Spirit as Your Guide - Larry Y. Wilson

Sister LeAnn Hansen gave our lesson today.

The story was shared about Ensign Blair who was on a ship when they encountered a Typhoon. (See conference address.)   From that story, here are some guidelines about how we can receive the Spirit’s guidance more frequently.

First, when it comes to revelation, we must properly tune our receiver to heaven’s frequency.
Sometimes we can’t hear heaven’s signal because we are not worthy. Repentance and obedience are the way to achieve clear communication again. The Old Testament word for repent means “to turn” or “turn around.” When you feel far from God, you need only make the decision to turn from sin and face the Savior, where you will find Him waiting for you, His arms outstretched. He is eager to guide you, and you are just one prayer away from receiving that guidance again.

Second, we should ask what can we do to be part of the solution. We might ask, “Lord, what do I need to do to be part of the solution?” Instead of just listing our problems in prayer and asking the Lord to solve them, we ought to be seeking more proactive ways of receiving the Lord’s help and committing to act according to the Spirit’s guidance.

A third important lesson. --Could he have prayed with such calm assurance if he had not received guidance from the Spirit on previous occasions? The arrival of a typhoon is no time to dust off the gift of the Holy Ghost and figure out how to use it. This young man was clearly following a pattern he had used many times before, including as a full-time missionary. We need the Holy Spirit as our guide in calm waters so His voice will be unmistakable to us in the fiercest storm.

The storms of deception and the mists of falsehood arise without warning. In these situations, being familiar with the voice of the Holy Ghost is a matter of spiritual life and death.

Following the feet of the people ahead of you on the path is not enough. We cannot just do and think what others are doing and thinking; we must live a guided life. We must each have our own hand on the iron rod. Then we may go to the Lord with humble confidence, knowing that He “shall lead [us] by the hand, and give [us] answer to [our] prayers.”

Ministering -
The first round of Ministering Interviews will be held Sunday, July 15th starting at 2:15 p.m. (Immediately following our church block). This will be for all Ministering companionships that are in District #1 ***Please review the ministering sheet that was posted on the blog on June 26th, or ask a member of the RS presidency to get your time.

We have many sisters (and brothers also) who are in need of our thoughts and prayers.  We encourage you to reach out to those that you are aware of, to help strengthen them in their time of difficulty. A phone call, a note or a text can go far in letting these ward members know they are loved and not forgotten.

Announcements for July 1, 2018

From our Lesson - Our Council discussion was led by Charlotte Maughan.
Thank you to all who participated and shared.  As sisters, we face many difficult challenges in our lives.  As we seek guidance and personal revelation, we will receive direction on how to navigate those challenges, as well as being guided and directed as we minister to the varied needs of those around us.
In conjunction with our discussion, Sister Maughan handed out heart Jewels to everyone, as she shared a story of a slightly handicapped young man she encountered at work one day while she was having a particularly difficult day.  As there paths crossed he eventually approached her holding out his hand and said “This is for you.”  He then dropped a little red plastic heart into her hand.  –This very small, but sincere act changed her day, and left a lasting impact on her life.
For our goal for this month, each sister was given a heart jewel and asked to look for an opportunity to pass it along to someone.  Each week we will ask sisters to share their experience with this from the previous week.
As we simply share love with others, we help them feel the love of the Savior.

Ministering -
As a presidency we want to send out a reminder that you do not need to report your ministering efforts and visits monthly like we have done in the past.  Our Supervisors have been released and all feedback on your families or individuals should be made to a member of the presidency. You will have the opportunity to report on your sisters in the Quarterly Interview with a member of the Relief Society Presidency.  --That being said, --please feel free to contact a member of the presidency with concerns or other pertinent information, anytime, about the sisters and families that you minister to.  You are our lifeline to helping us know the needs of our sisters.  As we work together, and seek the guidance of our Heavenly Father, our Ministering efforts will be blessed.
