From our Lesson Today -
Sister Angie Farr gave our lesson today.  Our topic was - “There are many ways we can minister to others.”

We discussed the importance of developing a relationship with the sisters we minister to.  Find out what their interests are, what their worries and concerns are, what their hopes and dreams are.

We also discussed the importance of gearing our efforts around “their” needs.  Does your sister need a visit, a walk, a text, a lesson, a listening ear, etc.  Each sister’s needs are different.

We were encouraged to pray individually for our sisters.  Pray as if their needs are our needs.  The Lord is ready and willing to reveal his will to us if we take the time to sincerely ask Him. This is His work we are doing.

Below is a handout that we shared at our Ministering Interviews this past quarter.  We didn’t get it to the 2nd district of ladies that we interviewed, so I decided to put it here.  It has a list of some ideas for ministering.  Keep it simple and share your love with your sisters.

From our Lesson Today -Our lesson was given by Kirsten Knowles  - Prepare To Meet God by Quentin L. Cook

The divine manifestations that occurred in the Kirtland Temple were foundational to the purpose of the restored Church of Jesus Christ to bring to pass the salvation and exaltation of our Heavenly Father’s children. As we prepare to meet God, we can know what our divinely appointed responsibilities are by reviewing the sacred keys restored in the Kirtland Temple.

The Kirtland Temple, both in location and size, was relatively obscure. But in terms of its enormous significance to mankind, it was eternity-shaping. Ancient prophets restored priesthood keys for the eternal saving ordinances of the gospel of Jesus Christ. This resulted in overwhelming joy for faithful members.

These keys provide the “power from on high” for divinely appointed responsibilities that constitute the primary purpose of the Church. On that wonderful Easter day in the Kirtland Temple, three keys were restored:

First, Moses appeared and committed the keys of the gathering of Israel from the four parts of the earth, which is missionary work.

Second, Elias appeared and committed the keys of the dispensation of the gospel of Abraham, which includes the restoration of the Abrahamic covenant. President Russell M. Nelson has taught that the purpose of the covenant keys is to prepare members for the kingdom of God. He said, “We know who we are and [we know] what God expects of us.”

Third, Elijah appeared and committed the keys of the sealing power in this dispensation, which is family history work and temple ordinances enabling salvation for the living and the dead.

We now have temples across the world... As individuals, we would do well to evaluate our effort in pursuing missionary work, temple and family history work, and preparations to meet God.

From our Lesson Today -

It Is All About The People - Bishop Gerald Causse

...the Church is all about people. It is all about you, the Lord’s disciples—those who love and follow Him and who have taken His name upon them by covenant.

Isn’t it wonderful that the name given by revelation to the restored Church binds together the two most important elements in each gospel covenant? First is the name Jesus Christ. This Church belongs to Him, and His sanctifying Atonement and covenants are the only pathway to salvation and exaltation. The second name refers to us: the Saints, or in other words, His witnesses and His disciples.

President M. Russell Ballard taught, “What is most important in our Church responsibilities is not the statistics that are reported or the meetings that are held but whether or not individual people—ministered to one at a time just as the Savior did—have been lifted and encouraged and ultimately changed.”

I bear witness that this Church is the Church of Jesus Christ. Its strength and vitality come from the daily actions of millions of His disciples who strive each day to follow His supreme example by caring for others. Christ lives and He directs this Church. President Russell M. Nelson is the prophet whom He has chosen to lead and guide us in our days.

Ministering -

****Ministering Interviews for those in District #3 will be held next Sunday - September 16th following our church block.  Please see the Ministering assignment list to see what time you should come.  ***Meet at the front of the chapel for interviews in the empty bishopric office and High Priest room.

(Continued from article in Sept. 2018 Ensign)

These are ideas shared in the Ensign article titled - Ministering Principles - Council About Their Needs -

1. Counseling with Heavenly Father -
One of the central tenets of our faith is that Heavenly Father speaks to His children (see Articles of Faith 1:9). When we receive a new assignment to minister to someone, we should counsel with Heavenly Father in prayer, seeking insight and understanding into their needs and strengths. That process of counseling through prayer should continue throughout our ministering assignment.

2. Counseling with Individuals and Families -
How and when we approach the individuals and families we are called to serve may vary depending on the circumstances, but counseling directly with the individual or family is essential for building relationships and understanding their needs, including how they want to be helped. Some questions may need to wait until a meaningful relationship has developed. While there’s no one right way to do that, consider the following:

-Find out how and when they prefer to be contacted.
-Learn about their interests and backgrounds.

-Come with suggestions for how you could help, and ask for their suggestions.

As we build trust, consider discussing individual or family needs. Ask questions as prompted by the Holy Ghost.

For example:
What are the challenges they face?
What are their family or individual goals? For example, do they want to be better at holding regular family home evening or be more self-reliant?
How can we help them with their goals and challenges?
What gospel ordinances are coming up in their lives? How can we help them prepare?

Remember to offer specific help, such as, “Which night can we bring a meal to you this week?” A vague offer, like, “Let us know if there’s anything we can do,” is not very helpful.

Announcements for September 2, 2018

From our Lesson Today - Charmaine taught our council discussion today. Thank you to all who participated.

We talked about goals and also making goals that help us grow closer to the Savior so that we can keep him in our minds and hearts always.  Some things that were discussed -

-Does what I am doing line up with the things that I value?
-By making a few small changes, often things will snowball and have positive impact on other areas of our lives.
-Set an alarm on your phone that will remind you to think of a goal you are working on, or for a time when you can think about the Savior.  We set alarms and reminders for many things.  Try this and see how it impacts your day, week and life.

The challenge was made to think about three things you want to stop doing and then three things you want to start doing.  Put these into place this week and over the next few weeks and see what happens.

Ministering -
(Taken from article in Sept. 2018 Ensign “Counsel About Their Needs)

God has invited you to minister to an individual or family in your ward or branch according to their needs. How do you find out what those needs are? The principle of counseling, which has been such a focus in the Church, is key.

What We Counsel About-

Understanding needs is essential to ministering to one another. But what forms can those needs take, and is there something more than needs that we should find out?

Needs can come in many forms. Those we serve may face challenges that are emotional, financial, physical, educational, and more. Some needs are higher priority than others. Some we will be equipped to help with; others may require us to enlist help ourselves. In our efforts to help meet temporal needs, don’t forget that our call to minister includes helping others progress along the covenant path, preparing for and receiving the priesthood ordinances essential for exaltation.

In addition to counseling about an individual’s or family’s needs, we should seek to learn their strengths. What don’t they need help with? What abilities and gifts do they have that could bless others? How are they uniquely suited to help build the kingdom of God? An individual’s strengths may be as important to understand as his or her needs.
