From our Lesson - Council discussion on the Joys and importance of Family History

Sandra led our discussion about Family History.  There was a lot of good sharing.  There are so many ways to participate and enjoy Family History.  It doesn’t have to wait until you have “time” to do it.  Start now to collect favorite family stories of those who are now living, and maybe you will become interested in collecting stories from the older generation that is living about their lives and some of the previous generation who they knew and loved and associated with that are not living.  These stories have great influence in our lives and the lives of our children as the Spirit of Elijah enters our homes and families.

Goals - A couple of ideas that were suggested for our goal for this month were –

If you have youth in your home, especially those of Young Men and Young Women ages, help and encourage them to work towards the goal of doing temple work before their Summer camps.

If you are uncertain, ask the youth in your home to help you learn about using family tree and finding names that need ordinances.  (There are also adults in the ward who have the Family History bug that would be glad to help out. ---A few suggestions - Charlene Heaton, Sherry Lowery, Jeanne Davis, Charlotte Maughan to name a few. –there are more.)

As you ponder this important subject and think of the many ways there are to do Family History, try not to bo overwhelmed.  Pick ONE small thing. (Collecting stories, thinking of questions to ask older living relatives, record an event or events from your life, sorting photos, organizing items you have in your possession etc...) Just pick one small thing and try to work on it this month.  It is very rewarding and you will be blessed for your efforts.

Remember not to let yourself become overwhelmed.  Many who shared today, have been working on projects over the years.  Challenge yourself to pick something small and get started.

Malachi 4:5-6
5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord:

6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers,.......
