Announcements for February 4, 2018
From our lesson today -
We had our 1st Sunday Council today with the topic of - “What can we do to help loved ones who have left the church, have a desire to return?”
One of the greatest heartaches a valiant parent in Zion can suffer is a child who strays from the gospel path. Questions of “Why?” or “What did I do wrong?” and “How can this child now be helped?” are pondered without ceasing in the minds and hearts of such parents. These men and women pray earnestly, search the scriptures diligently, and listen intently to the counsel of priesthood and auxiliary leaders as they turn to the gospel of Jesus Christ for guidance, strength, and solace.
(Faithful Parents and Wayward Children - Sustaining hope while overcoming misunderstanding - Elder Bednar - Ensign March 2014)
If we knew that our family members would eventually return, would that change how we act in our stories today? I believe we might live with a much greater degree of peace, love, and acceptance. As we work to make our story turn out well, it helps to remember that we can choose to approach loved ones from a place of peace and love rather than anger and fear. As Paul wrote, “God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7). As Elder Carmack urges: “Never give up. If you cannot seem to reach your daughter or son now, you can at least keep trying and keep loving them. … Do not give in to paralyzing feelings of guilt and hopelessness. Seek spiritual help and peace. Be strong and courageous. You will see it through.”– (When a Child Leaves the Church - Ensign Feb 2016)
We made goals related to this topic to work on during this next month -
-Look for someone to encourage and show love to. Tell them they are great, and express your appreciation for the good things they do.
-Pray for guidance to know who you can reach out to to make a positive difference in their lives, then follow through on the prompting.
